SHA-256, visualized.
SHA-256 is the cryptographic hash function at the heart of Bitcoin — securing blocks, transactions, and mining. Type anything below and watch the digest change. Change a single character and see the avalanche effect ripple through the output.
SHA-256 digest (hex)
0 nibbles changed vs. previous input 0 of 256 bits
Digest as a 16×16-bit field
Why this matters for Bitcoin
- Deterministic: the same input always produces the same 256-bit digest.
- One-way: there is no feasible way to reverse a digest back into its input.
- Avalanche effect: changing one character flips roughly half of all output bits — which is why a Bitcoin block cannot be tampered with unnoticed.
- Mining is a race to find an input whose SHA-256 digest falls below a target — pure proof of expended work.
